Amotekun operatives
By MUFTAU OGUNYEMI
Residents of Owena-Ayetoro community of Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State have appealed to the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, for a base in the community to tackle kidnapping and insecurity.
The appeal was made by Mr Charles Akinwon and Mr Olorunsola Olutosoye, Chairman and Secretary of the community’s committee, respectively, in a letter written to Adetunji Adeleye, Commander of Amotekun Corps in Ondo State.
The letter, made available to newsmen on Saturday in Akure, said the establishment of the Amotekun base became necessary due to the apprehension and fear being faced by the community.
According to the letter, the community has become a hideout of bandits and criminals in recent times.
“For instance, on July 29, bandits took over the former Army checkpoint in the area, where a resident was shot. Also, a young boy said to be working under one Mr Monday at Ago was kidnapped.
“As at the time of writing this letter, the victim is still under intensive care in a hospital in Akure due to the grave injury sustained from the gunshot.
“Still, in the month of July, a suspected bandit was found in possession of various harmful weapons in the community. Fortunately, he was apprehended and handed over to the Idanre Unit of the Amotekun Corps.
“We strongly believe that with the presence of the base in the community, it will curb the activities of these devilish individuals.
“The base will also give solid assurances to the residents who are now living in fear,” the letter said.
It, therefore, reiterated the community’s commitment and preparation to accommodate the Amotekun Corps base, if established.
The letter also explained that the community had put in place a befitting and suitable structure to serve as the base, which was, to some considerable extent, being furnished.
“Though, we have earlier made this appeal to the agency both oral and in writing, including visitations to the esteemed office on more than two occasions.
“We, therefore, deem it fit to write this letter to reiterate our plight and also bring to your notice, the steps already taken by the community to accommodate the agency.
“We hope and believe our appeal will be given the speedy consideration it deserves, considering the danger currently going on within the community,” it said. (NAN)
