•Ambassador courts NIDO partnership, pledges stronger welfare, unity and representation for Nigerians in Diaspora

In what could mark the beginning of a new chapter in Embassy-community relations, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, His Excellency, Engr. Abasi Ogwime Braimah, has opened strategic engagement with the leadership of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), Hungary Chapter, pledging to prioritise the welfare, unity and legitimate interests of Nigerians in the country higher on his diplomatic agenda.

The Ambassador made the commitment on Friday at the Nigerian Embassy in Budapest when he received the executive members of NIDO Hungary in a familiarisation audience aimed at building stronger bridges between the Embassy and the Nigerian community.

Coming at a time when the effectiveness of diaspora engagement increasingly depends on cooperation between diplomatic missions and citizens abroad, the meeting recalibrated the platform for both sides to discuss issues of mutual interests as Nigerians in Hungary and explore practical pathways for deeper collaboration.

The NIDO delegation was led by its Chairman, Hon. Chief Komolafe Omotunde, and included the General Secretary, Aese Agaigbe; Financial Secretary, Oyun Adesoye; Social Secretary, Aese Cynthia Aese; and Treasurer, Erenwa Olaedo Cynthia.

Addressing the NIDO leadership, Ambassador Braimah emphasised that the welfare and advancement of Nigerians in the Diaspora cannot be achieved through isolated efforts, but requires sustained dialogue, cooperation and a shared sense of responsibility.

He reaffirmed his commitment to fostering unity, constructive engagement and mutual support among Nigerians in Hungary and across the countries under his diplomatic responsibility.

The Ambassador stressed that the Embassy would continue to support initiatives capable of advancing the aspirations and legitimate interests of Nigerians in the Diaspora, while encouraging community stakeholders to work together in addressing challenges and creating opportunities for collective progress.

He also underscored the importance of a strong working relationship between the Embassy, NIDO and other Nigerian community organisations, describing such collaboration as critical to building a cohesive, vibrant and supportive Nigerian community.

For Ambassador Braimah, the objective extends beyond community relations. A stronger and more organised Nigerian community, he noted, can contribute positively to Nigeria’s image, strengthen people-to-people relations and enhance the country’s broader diplomatic and economic interests.

NIDO pledges partnership. “We must work together”, he retorted.

Responding on behalf of the Nigerian community, NIDO Hungary Chairman, Hon. Chief Komolafe Omotunde, assured the Ambassador of the organisation’s readiness to work closely with the Embassy in advancing initiatives designed to improve the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerians in Hungary.

Omotunde pledged NIDO’s support for programmes that promote unity, responsible citizenship, mutual assistance and meaningful engagement between Nigerians and the Embassy.

He also expressed confidence that closer collaboration would create a more effective platform for identifying community concerns and developing constructive responses to them.

A new era of Embassy-community engagement?

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides expressing confidence that stronger cooperation would enhance communication, mutual understanding and representation of Nigerians in Hungary.

Beyond the formalities of a familiarisation meeting, the engagement could signal a broader effort to bring the Embassy and the Nigerian community into closer partnership, with community welfare and cohesion placed at the heart of the relationship.

As Nigerians continue to make their mark in different sectors of Hungarian society, the message emerging from the Budapest meeting was clear: a stronger Nigerian community abroad requires a stronger partnership between the community and its diplomatic mission.

The engagement therefore represents an important early step towards building a more united, responsive and better-coordinated Nigerian community in Hungary—one capable of advancing not only the welfare of its members but also the wider interests and image of Nigeria.
