The Anambra State Police Command has announced the assumption of duty of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, as the new Commissioner of Police in the state. He is replacing retired AIG Ikoye Orutugu.

A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, CP Oji Ama holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Jos.

The new Anambra Police Commissioner brings more than three decades of experience in policing, intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command to his new assignment.

Before his deployment to Anambra State, CP Oji Ama served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja. He had earlier served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.

He began his career in the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and received training at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.

Throughout his career, the new Commissioner has held several strategic and operational positions across different formations of the Nigeria Police Force.

His previous appointments include Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia; Commanding Officer, No. 11 Police Mobile Force, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer, Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in the Federal Capital Territory.

He also served as Coordinator of Courses at the Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, No. 26 Police Mobile Force, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango Otta, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, among other strategic assignments.

CP Oji Ama has undergone several professional, tactical and strategic training programmes in Nigeria and abroad.

His training includes the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing; Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; Advanced Detective Course; as well as various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.

The new Commissioner is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.

Speaking shortly after assuming office today, Monday, August 10, 2026, CP Oji Ama pledged to consolidate existing security gains in Anambra State and further strengthen cooperation between the Police and other security agencies.

He harped on the importance of collaboration with traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders in addressing security challenges across the state.

The CP further assured residents, visitors and businesses in Anambra of the Command's renewed determination to protect lives and property, prevent and combat crime, uphold the rule of law and create a safer environment for economic and social activities.

He added: "I call for continued support and cooperation from residents and other stakeholders. Effective policing requires partnership between security agencies and the communities."
