CONCACAF has joined UEFA in rejecting FIFA’s proposed sale of commercial rights linked to the FIFA World Cup, deepening opposition to a plan that would bring private investors into the tournament’s business operations.
The confederation, which governs football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, announced its stance following an emergency meeting, becoming the second continental governing body to publicly oppose the proposal.
FIFA’s plan reportedly seeks to raise billions of dollars by selling a stake in the commercial rights to the World Cup to outside investors. However, critics argue that such a move would undermine football’s governance and hand excessive influence over the sport’s flagship competition to private equity.
UEFA had earlier rejected the proposal, describing it as a step that football’s governing institutions “should never cross.” CONCACAF’s decision now strengthens resistance to the plan, piling further pressure on FIFA as it considers the future of the controversial investment proposal. (Arise News)
