Omi Eko water transport project
By CHIAZO OGBOLU
The Lagos State Government has officially started the Project Management, Operations and Design (PMOD) consultancy for its Omi Eko Project.
This marks another major milestone in the implementation of the landmark initiative aimed at transforming water transport across the state.
At the PMOD consultancy meeting in Lagos on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the commencement of the consultancy as a critical step toward delivering a modern, efficient and sustainable water transport system.
According to the commissioner, it signals the beginning of a strategic partnership that will provide technical leadership, operational guidance and project management expertise required for successful delivery of the Omi Eko Project.
“The Omi Eko Project represents one of the most ambitious investments in inland waterways transportation in Africa.
“Beyond modern infrastructure and electric ferry technology, the project is designed to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance passenger safety, stimulate economic activities and contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability through cleaner transport solutions,” Osiyemi said.
He said that the PMOD consultancy role extended beyond project management and design.
He said that the consultancy would play a pivotal role in coordinating stakeholders, supporting implementation and ensuring successful delivery of the project.
The commissioner emphasised that the success of the Omi Eko Project would depend on close collaboration among Lagos State Government, development partners, consultants, contractors and host communities.
He thanked Gov. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, French Development Agency, European Investment Bank and European Union for continued support and confidence in the state’s vision for sustainable urban mobility.
Osiyemi also commended Omi Eko Project Team, Lagos State Waterways Authority and other stakeholders for dedication.
On behalf of the PMOD consultancy, the Head of Delegation and Director, International Unit, Planet SA, Mr Dimitris Galanis, reaffirmed commitment to delivering its assignment in line with international best practices.
“We are honoured to partner with the Lagos State Government and its development partners on this transformational project.
“Our team is committed to providing world-class project management, operational planning and technical expertise to ensure the successful implementation of the Omi Eko Project.
“We look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to deliver a safe, efficient and sustainable water transport system that will benefit millions of Lagos residents,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Omi Eko Project is a flagship initiative of the Lagos State Government designed to revolutionise water transport through modern infrastructure, electric ferry services and improved operational systems.
It will promote environmental sustainability and economic development. (NAN)
