The leadership dispute in Obazu Town Union appears to have reached a legal conclusion following a ruling by the High Court of Imo State sitting in the Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Judicial Division, Nwaorieubi.
Justice I.O. Agugua, Acting Chief Judge, on March 24, reaffirmed the court’s earlier judgment on the leadership of the union and clarified the legal position regarding the office of the President General.
The court upheld its March 23 judgment, declaring that the tenure of Chief Iheanyi Abaekwume, the first defendant, as President General of Obazu Town Union had expired and therefore stood terminated.
The judgment stressed the need for adherence to constitutional provisions governing leadership positions in community organisations, affirming that no office holder can remain in office beyond the tenure prescribed by law.
The court also struck out an application for a stay of execution, removing any legal impediment to the enforcement of its judgment.
Legal observers and community stakeholders described the ruling as a reaffirmation of the rule of law, due process and constitutional order within community institutions.
Consequently, Prof. Godfrey Nwandikom was reaffirmed as the authentic and duly recognised President General of Obazu Town Union.
The judgment is expected to end months of uncertainty and leadership disputes that generated concern among elders, youths, women groups and Obazu indigenes at home and in the diaspora.
Stakeholders said several development projects suffered setbacks during the leadership crisis, noting that the absence of stable and constitutionally recognised leadership slowed community development efforts and weakened the union’s capacity to mobilise resources for critical projects.
Supporters of the current administration, however, point to what they describe as a renewed era of purposeful leadership under Prof. Nwandikom.
They cited the rehabilitation of the Orie Mbieri–Obazu–Nkwo Orji road corridor, installation of solar-powered streetlights in strategic locations and other projects aimed at improving infrastructure, security and residents’ welfare.
Observers said the significance of the judgment extends beyond the immediate parties, serving as a reminder that leadership legitimacy must derive from lawful and constitutional processes rather than personal interests or influence.
They described the ruling as a victory for democracy, accountability and institutional integrity within the community.
Following the judgment, stakeholders called on all Obazu sons and daughters to set aside past differences and support the recognised leadership.
They stressed that the community’s future depends on unity, reconciliation and a collective commitment to development.
Community leaders also urged all parties to embrace peace and work together for the common good, noting that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of cooperation, mutual respect and visionary leadership.
As reactions continue to trail the ruling, many residents regard it as a defining moment in the history of Obazu Town Union and express hope that it will usher in a new era of lawful administration, peace and accelerated development.
For many Ndi Obazu, the judgment represents not only a legal victory but also an opportunity to close a chapter marked by contention and uncertainty and open a new one anchored on justice, accountability, unity and sustainable progress.
The leadership of Obazu Town Union, under Prof. Nwandikom, pledged its commitment to the development, unity and advancement of the community. (The Nation)
