NAHCON Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf
By GARBA MUHAMMAD
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has reaffirmed its commitment to strict compliance with food safety regulations during the 2026 Hajj operations in Saudi Arabia, insisting that the wellbeing of Nigerian pilgrims remains a top priority.
In a statement issued by the Commission, NAHCON disclosed that Saudi health authorities have continued to enforce stringent food safety standards in view of the prevailing weather conditions and the need to safeguard pilgrims’ health throughout the pilgrimage period.
According to the Commission, some dinner meals served to pilgrims on the night of May 27, 2026, failed to meet the required handling and packaging standards and were immediately rejected in collaboration with Saudi health officials.
NAHCON explained that alternative light refreshments were promptly provided by the service support company to cushion the temporary inconvenience experienced by affected pilgrims.
The Commission further revealed that members of the NAHCON Board had visited affected State officials to explain the development and reassure pilgrims of the Commission’s commitment to their welfare.
Reacting to the incident, the NAHCON Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, directed the Security Committee to investigate the caterers involved as well as individuals linked to the award of the affected contracts.
In a related development, the Chairman also ordered the Central Security Committee to investigate Tour Operators alleged to have brought in more pilgrims than officially registered, while also exploiting unsuspecting pilgrims.
NAHCON warned that any operator found culpable after investigations would face strict sanctions, including withdrawal of operational licenses.
The Commission also announced that arrangements were already underway to ensure prompt refunds for pilgrims affected by the rejected meal service.
While appreciating the patience and understanding of Nigerian pilgrims, NAHCON reassured all stakeholders of its unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe, smooth and successful Hajj exercise.
The Commission prayed for Allah’s acceptance of the acts of worship of all pilgrims.
