The Police Command in Ekiti State says it has commenced an investigation into allegation of extortion involving some of its officers in the Ikole Division.
This is contained in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Sunday Abuti on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti.
The command distance its operatives from the reported arrest of some individuals over the sharing of video of a police officer allegedly under the influence of illicit drugs while on duty.
It also denied the allegation that the arrested individuals were asked to pay between ₦20,000 and ₦200,000 as bail.
The command disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye, had ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations.
It added that preliminary investigation revealed that no individual was arrested or detained in connection with the incident and that no money was demanded or collected from anyone as alleged.
The command explained that the four suspects arrested by the Ikole Division were apprehended over alleged illicit drug trafficking with exhibits recovered from them.
It stated further that the suspects had since been investigated and charged to court.
The command appealed to residents to remain calm while investigation is ongoing on the allegations.
It also urged members of the public to always verify information before sharing same on social media platforms.
The command reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property, maintenance of law and order, respect for citizens’ rights, and professionalism in the discharge of its duties. (NAN)
