The Federal Government has promised to support the Nigeria Police Force with the funds needed to secure the off-season elections coming up in June and August 2026.
The government said enough funding would be provided to help the police carry out smooth operations during the elections and also strengthen security efforts across the country.
The Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, gave the assurance when the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Rilwan Disu, visited his office in Abuja with a delegation.
A statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Bawa Mokwa, said Ogunjimi told the police leadership that the Federal Government understands the important role the Nigeria Police Force plays in protecting lives, maintaining peace and tackling insecurity.
He said the government is ready to release approved funds quickly so the police can perform their duties well, especially during the off-season elections scheduled for later this year.
Ogunjimi also advised the Inspector-General of Police to continue discussions with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy to help speed up the release of outstanding funds owed to the police.
According to him, lack of adequate funding could affect important police operations and weaken efforts to maintain security in different parts of the country.
“The role of the Nigeria Police Force in tackling the nation’s security challenges is enormous and requires adequate support to enable the Force discharge its responsibilities effectively and professionally,” Ogunjimi said.
Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police appealed to the Federal Government to release the outstanding funds owed to the Force without delay.
Disu said the police need proper funding to carry out their constitutional duties effectively and maintain law and order across the country.
He also spoke about the importance of funding the coming off-season elections in June and August 2026, saying the police would play a major role in ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
According to him, adequate funding would help the police provide security, deploy officers, move equipment and carry out other operations needed to ensure smooth elections.
The meeting also focused on improving cooperation between the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Nigeria Police Force to address funding challenges affecting police operations nationwide. (The Nation)
