Wikki Tourists team lineup
Wikki Tourist and Bayelsa United have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The teams were relegated after suffering defeats in the penultimate game of the season.
Bayelsa United lost 2-1 to Remo Stars in Ikenne, while Wikki Tourist conceded two late goals to succumb 3-2 to title-chasing Rivers United.
Bayelsa United took the lead through Ofem Nneoyi who capitalized on Remo Stars’ high line and a defensive slip to run through unchallenged and slot into the net with aplomb for the lead on five minutes.
Remo Stars continued to seek a way back into the match, and the Sky Blues got their break on 41 minutes through Alex Oyowah’s downward header into the net from a free-kick delivery.
The comeback was completed on 64 minutes by talismanic striker Victor Mbaoma who swept the ball into the net for his 13th league goal of the season, and the final whistle condemned Bayelsa United to relegation with 40 points, six points off the safety zone with just one match to the end of the season.
The defeat ends Yenagoa-based club’s four years stay, while Remo Stars have one more game to know their fate.
Wikki Tourist however returns to the NNL after just one season in the NPFL, despite Imanu Bala restoring the home side’s lead on 49 minutes.
George Finidi’s Rivers United, however, produced two goals to strip their hosts of all three points and confirmed their immediate return to the NNL.
The result means the NPFL title will be decided on the final day, with Rivers United one point behind Enugu Rangers who held on to the first position with a 2-1 victory over Bendel Insurance at the Cathedral. (Daily Trust)
