The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the alleged torture and unlawful treatment of a 16-year-old girl by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Kwara State.
The condemnation followed a meeting the association held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, in Awka, Anambra State.
NEC expressed deep concern over reports that the minor was allegedly assaulted, intimidated, and threatened with detention by police officers who were reportedly attempting to arrest her elder brother.
The Council described the allegations, if established, as grave violations of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Child Rights Act, and applicable international human rights instruments protecting minors and vulnerable persons.
NEC reiterated that no citizen, particularly a child, should be subjected to torture, degrading treatment, intimidation, or abuse by law enforcement agents under any circumstances.
The Council emphasised that law enforcement agencies are bound by constitutional safeguards and must conduct all operations within the limits of legality, professionalism, and respect for human dignity.
In adopting the resolution, NEC mandated the NBA Human Rights Committee and Civil Liberties Committee to immediately investigate the matter, engage relevant authorities, monitor developments, and take all lawful steps necessary to ensure accountability and protection of the victim’s rights.
NEC also called on the Nigeria Police Force and relevant oversight institutions to conduct a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation into the allegations and ensure that any officer found culpable is appropriately sanctioned. (The Guardian)
