There are growing indications that military veterans across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones are mobilising for a coordinated nationwide protest over delays in implementing the reported presidential approval for a change in leadership at the Military Pensions Board (MPB).
Sources within the veteran community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed concern over the continued stay in office of the current Chairman, Mikail Abdulraheem, despite a court ruling ordering the forfeiture of funds allegedly linked to him.
It would be recalled that the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Emeka Nwite, on March 17, ordered the final forfeiture of ₦400 million to the Federal Government in a case involving the MPB chairman.
Questioning the delay in administrative action, one veteran said: “What further action are the authorities waiting for? Is the decision of a competent court not part of the legal and institutional framework of government?”
The source argued that the situation highlights a disconnect between judicial pronouncements and administrative response, warning that failure to act could undermine public confidence in accountability systems.
Concerns have also been raised over the delay in enforcing the reported approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment of a retired officer, Sadeeq Adamu, to take over as chairman of the board.
The absence of a clear timeline or official explanation, according to the veterans, has fuelled uncertainty among retirees who depend on the board for their pensions.
Adding to the tension are allegations—yet to be independently verified—that some individuals within veterans’ leadership circles were approached with financial inducements to downplay the court ruling. Several veterans strongly denied the claims and insisted on transparency.
A retired colonel, who also spoke anonymously, alleged he was offered ₦1 million to remain silent but rejected the offer, stating that integrity must remain central to any institution managing pension funds.
Veterans have also criticised the involvement of external advocacy groups, which they claim have no direct link to the community but have publicly defended the current leadership.
Speaking on the development, Vet Cyril Oke said the agitation is not targeted at individuals but aimed at restoring credibility to the system.
“A veteran-led MPB, operating independently and guided by strong corporate governance principles, would be better positioned to address longstanding challenges and rebuild trust,” he said.
Similarly, Vet Michael Frima and Vet Danjuma Mamman emphasised that any planned protest would be peaceful and within the bounds of the law.
“Our objective is to draw attention to the urgent need for reform and to ensure that the President’s directive is implemented without further delay,” Mamman said.
“This is about the integrity of our institutions and the welfare of those who have served the nation. When a court has spoken, and when an approval has been granted, there must be clarity and action.” (Nigerian Tribune, but headline rejigged)
