Suspected armed bandits have launched fresh attacks on communities in Kogi State, killing one resident and injuring two others.
The affected areas are Edede and Ojapata communities in Oganenigu, Dekina Local Government Area of the state.
The attackers reportedly stormed the communities around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday and shot dead a resident identified as Nasiru Ulayi.
They also set several houses ablaze in both Ojapata and Edede, rendering many residents homeless and forcing them to flee to makeshift camps.
In a related incident, gunmen ambushed two members of a local vigilante group at Onitcha-Igo in Ofu Local Government Area. The vigilantes, who were on routine patrol, reportedly walked into the ambush, prompting the attackers to open fire.
Although the vigilante members managed to escape, they sustained serious injuries during the attack.
They were subsequently rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH), Lokoja, where they are currently receiving treatment. One of the victims is said to be undergoing surgery for a severe bone fracture.
An eyewitness expressed concern over the increasing activities of kidnappers in the affected communities, describing the situation as alarming.
“The kidnappers in these communities are brazen and determined to carry out their activities despite the presence of security operatives,” the source said.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Kogi State Police Command for official confirmation were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Oyiza Saliu, could not be reached at the time of filing this report. (Nigerian Tribune)
