Human rights activist, Aloysius Emeka Attah
BY BONIFACE AKARAH
The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law has commended the appointment of rights activist Aloysius Emeka Attah as Director of Information and Public Relations at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, describing it as a recognition of grassroots advocacy and intellectual development.
In a statement signed by its Board Chairman, Emeka Umeagbalasi, and other principal officers, the group said Attah’s emergence reflects the growing impact of rights-based activism in institutional leadership.
“We not only wish him good luck… but also wish to see him becoming a Doctorate Degree holder and a Professor in no distant future,” the statement said, urging him to “remain a good ambassador of the Anambra School of Human Rights and Democracy Activism.”
The organisation also praised Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo for approving automatic employment for 37 first-class graduates of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University.
“This commendation is strictly subject to such employment being implemented in full compliance with the State Civil Service Rules,” the group said, warning that “the automatic employment must not be tantamount to political employment that does not go beyond the incumbent governor’s era.”
Intersociety further insisted that the appointments should be made permanent, stating that beneficiaries “must be remunerated and accorded all the rights and privileges as career civil servants.”
On institutional matters, the group rejected the renaming of the university’s Uli campus after former governor Chinweoke Mbadinuju, describing the move as inappropriate.
“The name of the university must irrevocably remain… anything to the contrary is a mere academic exercise or effort in futility,” it said.
The group argued that altering established institutional identities could create unnecessary controversy, adding that “universities and their campuses must retain consistency in identity and historical significance.”
It maintained that Its positions were aimed at strengthening governance standards, urging authorities to ensure that decisions affecting public institutions align with transparency, accountability, and long-term public interest.
