Road users and traders around the Sango Motor Park along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway have lamented the slow pace of reconstruction work on the road.
They called on the Federal Government to prevail on the contractors handling the project to speed up work, adding that the delay is putting pressure on businesses in the corridor.
Some of the traders blamed the delay on a lack of manpower from the company, which is said to be handling a major contract in the area.
A transport union member, who identified himself as Rahmon, said, ” It is even like they have abandoned the job. At times, they come late, and at times they don’t even come at all.
They are putting pressure on the police. If not for the intervention of the police at the Area Command, the road would have been completely abandoned .”
He also stated that, “The slow pace of the construction work has almost crippled our operation. Drivers avoid our park now because of the traffic.”
Joshua Apoga, a resident of one of the communities after the bridge, described the ongoing work as very “slow and poor.”
He said, “The contractors are not because the road is very strategic. They are not managing the traffic very well .”
According to him, "The police are doing a great job here. If not for them, it would have been a complete standstill. There are many times when the Area Commander would supervise traffic duty by himself.
A trader in front of the Sango Garage, who pleaded anonymity, said, ” For many weeks now, they have blocked a major part of the road, and our businesses are affected.
“The whole road is choked up. It is even worse whenever it rains. There is no space for movement, not to mention doing business
“It is like they are bringing their workers from another site to work here. They come as if they are doing part-time here.”
A youth leader in Sango, Monsuru, said, “We have seen reconstruction work in many places. This one is different. They are not considering users of the road.
“What they are doing is not much, but they are wasting too much time. The movement from Sango under the bridge to the Toll gate should not take up to five minutes, but now, it may take you an hour as a result of traffic here.
“People are using one way, but the job is too slow. It is like they have abandoned the job we are doing, the way they are doing it. They just blocked the road with their equipment.” (Saturday Tribune)
