The Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra, Mr Chinedu Okafor, on Monday, warned drug abusers to desist from the act or face prosecution.
Okafor handed out the warning in Awka while addressing journalists.
According to him, the Council is ready to stage a major crackdown on drug abuse and illegal drug activities in the area.
He condemned the alarming increase of drug sale and consumption of hard drugs in the area, listing the hard drugs to include, cocaine, heroin, tramadol and crystal methamphetamine, popularly known as “Mkpuru Mmiri”.
“The move is aimed at safeguarding public health, restoring order and ensuring the safety of residents.
“Our priority is to safeguard public health, restore order and ensure the safety of our residents.
"We urge every member of the communities in Awka South to reject illicit drug activities and support efforts to build a healthier and safer area.
“This directive should be taken as a final warning, anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law."
Continuing, Okafor disclosed that the council was collaborating with security agencies to commence full-scale enforcement operations across the area, adding that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted without exception.
The Awka South Council boss further urged residents to steer clear of all forms of illicit drug activities.
