A group, Ogoni Liberation Initiative, OLI has demanded the immediate payment of $150 million from the Rivers state government as part of the compensation owed the Ogoni Community for the settlement on the OML11.
The President /CEO, Dr. Fabeke Douglas stated this at interaction meeting with the community, explaining, pursuing justice is not adversarial attack on institutions, but rather an opportunity to foster an environment where all citizens feel a sense of belonging.
Douglas also added, our team of legal experts had formally submitted a letter to the Rivers State Government demanding payment of $150 million, saying that N1billion was paid to a community, and they have gathered evidence to support this claim.
“Our legal team has prepared this letter with the intention of pursuing legal action if the Government fails to respond. At this time, we urge the Ogoni people to refrain from further agitation for oil resumption until our demands are met.”
The OLI President argued that the Demand for Ogoni Bill of Rights, payment of all compensation and clean the Ogoni environment are meant for the Government to establish trust with our people by ensuring justice is served.
“We have compiled evidence detailing the distribution of these funds between NNPCL and the Rivers State Government, revealing that negotiations and issues benefiting the communities were handled without involving the Ogoni people, except for privileged politicians.”
He however, maintained that they will be dispatching further letters as evidence unfolds while fourteen(14) days are given to the state government to respond to their legal team of experts. (The Guardian)
