Early caller Amaechi, seen on the right, discussing with El-Rufai
Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former Kaduna State governor, has arrived his Abuja residence after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) granted him a temporary release.
He was released on compassionate grounds to attend his late mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai’s burial. She died in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday after a period of illness.
Trending videos show the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain receiving visitors, with ADC presidential aspirant, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi among the early callers.
El-Rufai’s son, Bashir, had broken the news of his father’s release in a post on his X handle on Friday night.
He wrote: “Alhamdulillah. My beloved great legend of a father is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria that is a lame excuse of a pathetic institution.
“Thank you all for all the support. Our family shall never forget these times. We have overcome, as the El-Rufais,” he wrote.
El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 18 over allegations bordering on financial misconduct and other related matters.
Also, El-Rufai is facing separate prosecution by the Department of State Services, DSS, over alleged phone-tapping claims involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The Federal High Court in Abuja fixed April 23 for his arraignment in that case. (Adapted from a Saturday Vanguard report)
