Dignitaries at the unveiling of the ICRP on Monday in Lagos
A new consumer rights watchdog, the Institute For Consumer Rights and Product Liability Protection Ltd/Gte (ICRP), has been unveiled in Lagos, with a promise to fight for the rights of Nigerian consumers.
The unveiling, which took place on Monday, March 16, 2026, drew a galaxy of consumer rights gladiators, the media and the general public to the SME Hub in Gbagada, Lagos. The event was chaired by ICRP President & Executive Director, Chidi Ike (P.h.D.), while veteran consumer rights crusader, SAM Chukwuka Onyeka Ph.D., Founder/Lead Director, Transparent Protection Ltd./Gte., unveiled the ICRP logo with the assistance of other dignitaries that graced the event.
Welcoming guests and experts to the unveiling ceremony, ICRP President & Executive Director, Chidi Ike (P.h.D.), explained that it was organised to mark the World Consumer Rights Day 2026. “The World Consumer Rights day 2026 was actually yesterday, 15th of March, 2026 but being a Sunday, we decided to mark it today.
“15th of March each year is set aside by Consumers International to mark world consumer rights day. This was first observed in 1983 in honour of former US President, John F. Kennedy, who was the first world leader to formally outline key consumer rights, on March 15th 1962,” Dr. Ike said.
He assured that the ICRP would aggressively fight for the promotion and defence of consumer rights. “Together we can restore dignity to the Nigerian Consumer in every transaction,” he said.
Other highlights of the unveiling of the ICRP included keynote speeches by SAM Chukwuka Onyeka Ph.D., and Mr. Steve Onwuasoanya, former head, Human rights of Commonwealth Secretariat UK.
Both experts commended Dr. Ike, a seasoned lawyer and consumer rights expert, for establishing the ICRP, saying that, “the establishment of ICRP is a step in the right direction.”
