Irans new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei
There has still been no word from the new supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei three days after his appointment.
Government supporters and observers are eagerly awaiting the first speech by Khamenei amid the ongoing war, and are keen to see which political course he will take after his father was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran on February 28.
There is tense anticipation in the various power centres in Tehran.
Sources within parliament said that no plans are known as to when or if the 56-year-old Khamenei will make a statement. Members of parliament are in the dark themselves.
Khamenei survived the bombings in the heart of the metropolis 11 days ago, but also lost his wife, mother and a brother-in-law in the process.
Citing three Iranian officials, the New York Times reported that the new Iranian religious leader was wounded, having sustained injuries to his legs.
The report cannot currently be verified.
The government, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, has no contact with the new head of state at present.
“The government ministers have no news of him, and as far as I know, Pezeshkian himself has had no contact with His Eminence Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei,” a senior source in the government told the well-informed exile website Iranwire.
There is great confusion within the Cabinet. However, the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s elite force, are working “with great coordination,” the report said. (dpa/NAN)
