IPOB supporters
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on its members worldwide to support the medical care and legal defence of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, citing rising costs associated with his case.
In an internal memorandum dated February 13, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful said the directive was issued to coordinators, unit leaders, and members across the group’s global network.
Call for Coordinated Support
The memo stated that Kanu had appealed for support for organisations that have assisted him during his legal proceedings and health challenges.
The organisations identified include the American Veterans of Igbo Descent, Ambassadors for Self-Determination, and the Rising Sun Foundation, which were said to have provided various forms of assistance over the years.
Rising Costs and Access Challenges
According to the memo, Kanu’s detention outside Abuja has increased logistical costs for legal representatives and medical personnel who travel to visit him. The document noted that these expenses have created additional financial pressure on support efforts.
It added that broader fundraising initiatives may be introduced later in the year.
Health and Welfare Concerns
The memo expressed concern about Kanu’s health and emphasised the importance of sustained medical attention alongside his legal defence. No specific medical details were provided.
Call for Unity
IPOB leadership urged members to remain united, avoid internal disputes, and maintain discipline in their communications. The memo also encouraged members to verify information through official channels and to counter misinformation calmly.
Expectations for Members
Members were advised to circulate verified information, encourage voluntary participation in support efforts, and strengthen unity across organisational structures.
The statement emphasised solidarity among members while the legal process continues. (Vanguard)
