Budding Singer Ifunanya Nwaghene died of snake bite
Following the death of Ifunanya Nwaghene over a snake bite incident in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), snake bites have remained a topical issue of public concern in Nigeria, and experts say quick medical attention can make all the difference in saving lives.
Tribune Online reports that a rising music star, Ifunanya Nwaghene, popularly known as Nanyah, died on January 31, 2026, after she was bitten by a snake at her home in Abuja.
In a recent post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) reminded Nigerians of the important steps to take if they or someone around them gets bitten by a snake
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) advised citizens to remain calm, avoid harmful first-aid practices, and seek prompt treatment at the nearest health facility if a snake bite occurs.
According to the educational video, Nigerians are advised against applying tourniquets, cutting the wound, or using traditional remedies, adding that early response and correct information can save lives.
Here are tips on what to do when bitten by a snake or when someone around us gets bitten:
Snake bite is a medical emergency, so you must call for emergency services immediately
Stay calm and do not panic
Move away from the snake bite area to prevent second bite
Keep the bite area still, below the heart level
Remove tight clothing, jewelries and other materials that might be causing obstruction on the limb or the other part of the body
Do not use a tourniquet or tight resistant bandages on the site
Do not cut the wound or try to remove or to suck out the venom
Do not apply ice or submerge the bite site in water
Do not drink alcohol or caffeine
Do not take pain-relieving medications like aspirin or ibuprofen, because they can cause bleeding
If the person is unconscious, put the person on the right side to prevent aspiration from vomiting or vomitus
And take the person to a nearby health facility immediately for a medical emergency. (Nigerian Tribune)
