Armed herdsmen
Gunmen, suspected armed herdsmen, have killed two farmers in Tse Amuneke, Mbapupuu, Gaambe Ushin Council Ward of Gwer West Local Government Area, (LGA), of Benue State.
Our correspondent gathered that the farmers were killed on Thursday, January 22, 2026, while attempting to retrieve their farm produce.
Sources from the area identified the victims as Gungur Aondoakula, a 30-year-old teacher, and his 29-year-old friend, Shimayohol Ordi.
The sources ho didn’t want to be named said the incident followed an earlier confrontation on Wednesday when the two men were harvesting and threshing guinea corn on their farm.
He explained that while the men were nearing completion of the threshing, they were confronted by armed herders who chased them away from the farm.
“They had already threshed the guinea corn but were forced to flee for their lives when the herders appeared,” he said.
Unaware that the attackers were still lurking in the area, “the two men returned to the farm early the next day to pack the guinea corn they processed the previous day. It was during the return that the armed herdsmen ambushed and killed them.”
A local youth leader In the area who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the incident as heartbreaking saying “these were young, hardworking men. They went back only to pick what they had already laboured for.”
He disclosed that the attack has thrown the community into mourning, with residents expressing fear over what they described as repeated attacks on farmers in the area.
“Our people can no longer go to their farms freely. There is tension everywhere, and farmers are scared,” he said.
