President Tinubu
By BONIFACE AKARAH
A Niger Delta youth group, Niger Delta Youth for Good Governance (NDYFGG), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to recognise individuals it described as “unsung heroes” who have contributed to peace, development, and youth engagement in the region despite not holding political office.
The call was contained In an open letter to the President signed by Comrade Lucky O.O. Ukueku, National President of NDYFGG, and Mr. Peter Ebi, National Secretary, in which the group also commended the Tinubu administration for what it said were deliberate efforts to support the Niger Delta through appointments, employment opportunities, and development initiatives.
“We appreciate your efforts in supporting the Niger Delta Region through appointments, employment, and development initiatives aimed at enhancing human capital development,” the group stated.
However, the organisation argued that while long-serving political office holders have received recognition, many individuals who have worked at the grassroots to reduce hardship, unemployment, and insecurity have been overlooked.
“While your administration has recognised individuals who have held political positions for decades, there are others who, despite not holding office, have made significant contributions to reducing hardship, joblessness, and security challenges in the region,” the letter read.
The group expressed particular concern over the exclusion of Dr. Eshanekpe Israel Aka Akpodoro, popularly known as the Mayor of Urhobo Land, from those recognised by the Federal Government.
“We are particularly surprised that the Mayor of Urhobo Land, His Excellency Dr. Eshanekpe Israel Aka Akpodoro, was not included in the list of Niger Delta leaders recognised by your government,” the NDYFGG said.
According to the group, Akpodoro has consistently advocated peace in the Niger Delta, deploying personal resources to engage youths, women, elders, community leaders, and traditional rulers, while mobilising support for the current administration.
“Dr. Akpodoro has been a strong advocate for peace in the Niger Delta Region, using his resources to promote your leadership and engage with stakeholders across communities,” the letter added.
The youth group further called on the President to broaden recognition beyond political office holders, stressing that national development thrives when positive contributions at all levels are acknowledged.
“Nigeria needs to recognise and reward individuals who contribute positively to the development of the country, rather than only acknowledging those who have held political office,” the group stated.
The NDYFGG also highlighted the Urhobo ethnic group’s importance as one of Nigeria’s major oil-producing communities and appealed for greater inclusion of Urhobo sons and daughters in key federal positions.
While commending the administration for existing appointments, the group noted that internal divisions within the Urhobo community often prevent outstanding individuals from being properly projected.
“We commend Dr. Akpodoro based on his track record and performance in the Niger Delta Region,” the group said, adding that recognising his efforts would encourage others to commit to peace-building and community development.
