There has been a terrorism scare in the heart of Lagos, prompting the temporary closure of two elite secondary schools located in the GRA area of the state capital, Ikeja. While one of the schools (names withheld) hurriedly shut down yesterday, Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the other one asked parents and guardians to take back their children home this morning of Thursday, January 22.
News Express could not immediately confirm the nature of the threat allegedly received by the schools and the senders. Its checks however showed that other schools of similar status in Lagos are currently writing to intimate parents of steps they are taking to enhance security. An example is Greensprings Secondary School, Lekki, which wrote as follows:
"Dear Parents and Guardians,
"Good morning. We are writing to keep you informed and to reassure you following reports of a security-related incident at two schools in the Ikeja axis earlier today.
"We have been informed that these schools received reported threat messages. The relevant security authorities were immediately notified and are currently handling the situation. As a precaution, those schools are closed for the day.
"We wish to clearly reassure you that Greensprings School has not received any threat of any kind, and there is no indication that any of our campuses are at risk. All our campuses remain secure, and we are in ongoing communication with security agencies and our security consultants as the situation continues to be monitored.
"Out of an abundance of caution, and due to the proximity of one of our campuses to the affected area, the campus closest to the affected schools will close earlier than usual today. Parents of students in that campus have been contacted directly with specific dismissal arrangements.
"Please be assured that the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, and families remain the highest priority. This message is precautionary and proactive, taken to ensure calm, order, and security across our school community.
"We appreciate your understanding, cooperation, and continued trust. Further updates will be shared should the need arise."
