Gov Kabir Yusuf and President Tinubu at the Villa yesterday
The political pathway appears increasingly clear for Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), following what sources describe as a decisive, high-level meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Politics Digest reliably gathered that the governor’s camp erupted in jubilation after the private parley, with insiders indicating that weeks of political uncertainty have given way to renewed confidence. Senior party officials familiar with the discussions say the “risky political dilemma” earlier associated with the defection talks has been significantly de-escalated, amid assurances from the presidency regarding the governor’s political future.
Although no official communiqué has been issued on the outcome of the meeting, a high-ranking APC leader from the North-West told Politics Digest that the president’s intervention has provided Governor Yusuf with sufficient reassurance to move forward with plans to exit the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
According to the source, the governor was encouraged to allay concerns over his eligibility for an automatic APC gubernatorial ticket in 2027—a major sticking point that had previously stalled negotiations.
“The course is becoming clearer,” the source said. “The president has given assurances that Governor Yusuf’s second-term aspirations under the APC platform will be protected, provided the internal political alignment in Kano is managed with tact and sensitivity.”
Despite the reported breakthrough at the Presidential Villa, the presidency is said to have advised the governor against relying solely on top-down intervention. He has been urged to sustain ongoing consultations and deepen engagement with key APC stakeholders in Kano to prevent the emergence of a fresh internal crisis.
This caution comes amid lingering tensions within the Kano APC structure, particularly involving loyalists of the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, as well as other influential figures with vested interests in the state’s political direction ahead of 2027.
The upbeat mood within the governor’s camp marks a sharp contrast to the uncertainty reported by Politics Digest just days earlier, when the APC hierarchy was said to be reluctant to provide written guarantees for an automatic ticket. (https://politicsdigest.ng/exclusive-gov-abba-yusuf/)
With the latest development, Governor Yusuf’s recent acts of political defiance—symbolised by his meeting with the Kano State Executive Council in Abuja while donning the signature Kwankwasiyya red cap—may soon give way to a formal declaration. Politics Digest reports that the Abuja meeting with President Tinubu represented the final vetting stage before a public announcement that could significantly reshape the political dynamics of the North-West.
However, the so-called “Kwankwaso factor” remains a critical variable. As Governor Yusuf inches closer to the APC, the future of his relationship with his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, appears increasingly uncertain, especially amid reports that the former Kano governor is exploring a “third force” coalition, possibly with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
