PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports that it was planning to impose levy on its members across the country to fund its activities.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said at the weekend that the party was going through a rebirth process, adding that “Life is a curve; you go from the bottom to the apex and back down again.
“We started from zero in 1998, ruled for 16 years, and then began a descent. We have reached the bottom of the valley, and now we are heading back up. This is a rebirth process, which is always painful. We are analyzing our mistakes and successes.
“The strategy is simple: go back to the people. When the people are with you voluntarily, they fund the cause. In 1998, people made small contributions to fund the party, and that gave them a voice.” He said.
The PDP, once the dominant political force in the country, suffered significant setbacks last year, losing many of its leading figures, particularly state governors who serve as the party’s leaders at the state level.
From having more than ten governors in 2025, the PDP now controls only Adamawa, Bauchi, Oyo and Zamfara states.
Other party leaders including Senators, members of the House of Representatives had also left the party which has been factionalised by those loyal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, who are working for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, denying the reports on imposing levy on members, Ememobong, in a statement on Sunday, explained that the strategy is simple: “go back to the people. When the people are with you voluntarily, they fund the cause. In 1998, people made small contributions to fund the party, and that gave them a voice.
He said his statement clearly affirmed the PDP’s belief in “voluntary contributions, irrespective of amount, as a legitimate and time-tested model of grassroots political funding. The reference to N10,000 was purely illustrative, intended to demonstrate the collective strength of voluntary support, and not a directive, levy, or mandatory contribution.”
He Insisted that “there is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation imposed on any member of the PDP.
“We, therefore, urge our members and the public to discountenance the misleading headline and continue to support the party at all levels in ways they consider appropriate and convenient.” (Weekend Trust)
