The State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has rejected its dissolution announced by the party’s National Working Committee in some states, including Osun.
Making its position known in a statement signed by the party chairman, Sunday Bisi, obtained in Osogbo on Friday, the SWC assured members that “the party’s structures in the state remain lawful, intact and fully operational.”
The committee stated that “no amount of external pressure, unlawful national posturing, or recycled intimidation can invalidate a structure that derives its legitimacy from due process and the collective will of party members in Osun State,” and therefore urged members to remain calm, vigilant and focused.
It also asked them to disregard all signals, statements or directives emanating from “unauthorised quarters, particularly those clearly unknown to law.”
The statement added, “The party remains resolute in its support for the administration of His Excellency, Governor Ademola Adeleke, and in its preparation for electoral contests that are crucial to the wellbeing of our people.”
Meanwhile, a group, the Professionals in Osun PDP, has commended the National Working Committee for what it described as the right decision to set up a caretaker committee for the party in the state.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Sam Segun-Progress, also obtained in Osogbo, the group said the decision of the NWC was necessary “going by the actions and inactions of the erstwhile state working committee of the party.”
According to him, “with the caretaker committee in place, Osun PDP will begin its rebuilding and reorganisation to position it for the tasks ahead without further distractions.”
He subsequently charged the caretaker committee to rally round members of the party who had been abandoned and ostracised by the “erstwhile state working committee and start working on resolving members’ grievances to give genuine PDP members a sense of belonging.”
PUNCH Online reports that the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday approved caretaker committees for Delta, Rivers, Enugu, Imo and Osun states.
The party’s National Organising Secretary, Theophilus Shan, said the NWC acted on behalf of the National Executive Committee under Section 29(2)(b) of the PDP Constitution (2025).
In Osun, Tunde Tijani will serve as chairman, Bamidele Seyi-Abiola as secretary, and Lateef Mumini Obide as a member.
Other members are Alhaji Sarafa Gbadamosi, Adewoyin Babatunde, Ajileye Wasiu Aderemi and Oluresi Adebanji.
Shan said the committees would manage party affairs in their respective states as stipulated in Section 21(2)(a-b) of the PDP Constitution.
He added, “The tenure of these committees shall not exceed 90 days or until a new executive committee is elected.” (The PUNCH)
