From having eight senators at the inauguration of the 10th Senate in June 2023, the Labour Party (LP) is now left with none, the Nigerian Tribune reports.
Findings on Sunday showed that three factors accounted for the zero number of senators the LP is left with.
The leading factor is the gale of defections that hit not just the LP but also other opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lately, blamed largely on dwindling fortunes and festering leadership crises.
Investigations showed that three of the eight LP senators defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), beginning with Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi (Imo-East) in July, 2024.
In October 2025, Senator Kelvin Chukwu (Enugu-East) also defected to APC, blaming his decision on state and national LP crises.
Senator Neda Imasuen (Edo-South), earlier in June 2025, dumped the party as he moved to the APC.
Three others led by Senator Ireti Kingibe (FCT) left the LP and birthed in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Those who joined Kingibe in the ADC from the LP were Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra-Central) and Senator Tony Nwoye (Anambra-North), though Umeh and Nwoye have yet to have their defection letters read officially on the floor of the Senate.
As early as November 2023, the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, had sacked Senator Darlington Nwokeocha in the disputed Abia-Central seat he held on the platform of the LP prior to the court’s verdict.
The court had pronounced Augustine Akobundu of the PDP as the one who actually won the seat during the February 2023 National Assembly polls.
Until his death in November last year, Senator Okey Ezea held the Enugu-North Senatorial District seat on the platform of the LP.
Ezea’s passing left a vacuum expected to be filled through an election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) within 90 days from the date of the vacancy.
It is unclear if the LP will be able to retain the seat, a reality that leaves the party with no seat at the moment.
While the LP no longer have a sitting senator, the current configuration of the Senate shows that the APC enjoys a comfortable majority with 77 members; PDP, 25; ADC, four (4); APGA, one (1); NNPP, one (1); and SDP, one (1), bringing the overall total to 109 senators. (Nigerian Tribune)
