Protests continued to spread across the US on Thursday after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a woman in Minnesota.
Demonstrators continue to clash with federal officers in Minneapolis, the city where Wednesday's shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old American and mother of three, took place. Local officials cancelled school Thursday and Friday as a precaution amid concerns about the potential for unrest to grow.
Clashes and arrests were reported near the Whipple federal building on the city's outskirts. Bystander footage posted to social media appeared to show federal agents arresting at least one demonstrator amid chants of "Go home!" and "Police state!"
In New York City, protesters rallied at the World Trade Center where Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was giving a news conference, hours after demonstrators marched on nearby Foley Square late Wednesday.
Additional protests are expected in multiple cities later Thursday, including Washington, D.C., New York City, Seattle, Washington, Los Angeles and Chicago, as well as other locations.
US President Donald Trump and other US officials claim the shooting was a defensive act to stop the woman from running over agents.
But witnesses, video footage and statements from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Gov. Tim Walz have cast doubts on that account, suggesting Good was attempting to flee rather than intentionally harm officers.
Footage from multiple angles spread rapidly on social media. The videos appear to depict the officer, who fatally shot Good, was not in the path of her vehicle when he opened fire.
One video appears to show Good's SUV stopped in the middle of the street for unspecified reasons with multiple unmarked federal vehicles appearing down the road.
Agents approach Good's car, telling her to "get out of the ******* car" as one of the agents reaches for the door handle while the car reverses. Another officer, who has not been publicly identified, fires three shots at Good's car as she pulls forward with the wheels pointed right.
The agent was standing to the left of the vehicle when he opened fire. Good's car speeds away before crashing into a white vehicle parked down the road. It is not clear if she was dead at the moment of impact.
Other videos appear to depict federal agents preventing bystanders from providing medical care to Good, including a man who says he is a doctor.
"Can I go check a pulse?" the man asks.
"No. Back up. Now!" the agent responds as the video zooms in on the SUV's cabin, appearing to show Good slumped over with blood covering the front of her body.
"I'm a physician," the man says.
"I don't care," said the agent.
Vice President JD Vance accused Good of being a "part of a broader left-wing network to attack, to dox, to assault and to make it impossible for our ICE officers to do their job."
"If the media wants to tell the truth, they ought to tell the truth that a group of left-wing radicals have been working tirelessly, sometimes using domestic terror techniques to try to make it impossible for the President of the United States to do what the American people elected him to do, which is enforce our immigration laws," he said.
"This is classic terrorism, and we cannot say that when a far-left fringe is inciting violence against our brave law enforcement officials, that we're no longer going to enforce the law," he added in remarks to reporters at the White House.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a separate social media post that "peacefully protesting is a sacred American right protected by the First Amendment."
"Obstructing, impeding, or attacking federal law enforcement is a federal crime. So is damaging federal property. If you cross that red line, you will be arrested and prosecuted. Do not test our resolve," she added in a post on X.
Earlier Thursday, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension it is "reluctantly" withdrawing from the investigation after the US Attorney's Office reversed course and granted the FBI sole authority to probe the fatal shooting.
"Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses and information collected, we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands," it said in a statement.
Critics have questioned whether the shooting will be fairly reviewed under Trump’s FBI, amid allegations that the agency has become politicized under the Trump administration.
The administration previously deployed nearly 2,000 federal agents to Minnesota in an ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigration in the state, particularly on the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Amid widespread public opposition, the mayor of Minneapolis forcefully demanded that ICE “get out” of his city. Minnesotans opposed to ICE’s presence, including local officials, said the agents are making the state more dangerous, not safer, and its agents are not wanted. (AA)
