Kebbi abduction exposes worrying pattern of preventable attacks — JNI

The Sultan of Sokoto–led Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has condemned the abduction of schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, describing the incident as yet another alarming failure of security systems intended to protect schools across the North.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the religious body criticised the latest school raid as “heartless, tragic and utterly avoidable,” stressing that it occurred barely days after a major Security Summit in Birnin-Kebbi on November 10, 2025. JNI said the development reinforces a worrying pattern of preventable attacks on educational institutions.

The organisation recalled previous mass abductions in Chibok, Dapchi, Kankara, and Kagara, noting that the Maga raid bears unsettling similarities to earlier commando-style operations.

JNI lamented that despite years of repeated incidents, security agencies have not established a robust, proactive protection system for school environments. “This is too much to bear on the parents,” the group stated.

Through the Secretary-General, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, JNI said it has been closely observing the security situation in Kebbi State and is increasingly concerned about visible gaps in coordination and intelligence gathering.

It referenced the recent abduction and release of the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly as further evidence of “a worrying pattern of brazen criminality.”

The statement criticised what it described as habitual reactive responses from security operatives, arguing that authorities often provide little information to distressed parents and guardians. JNI questioned whether lessons from previous attacks have been applied at all.

“Do we really understand the magnitude of these repeated events?” it asked.

According to the organisation, the abduction is not only a security issue but a growing threat to girl-child education in Northern Nigeria.

“No parent will now be comfortable allowing their daughters to attend unprotected schools. And the North is the loser,” JNI warned, urging northern governors to urgently overhaul school security architecture.

JNI extended condolences to the family of the Vice-Principal who was killed during the attack, praying for comfort for bereaved families and the safe return of the abducted girls. It also prayed for the protection of security personnel across the country.

The group issued a strong call for all levels of government to step up rescue operations for victims of abductions in Maga, Dapchi, Chibok, and other affected communities.

“It is time for decisive action, no more rhetoric. Enough should be enough,” the statement stressed.

As part of its recommendations, JNI urged Muslim communities to observe Qunootun-Nawazil, engage in Adhkar, and make supplications in Sujood to ease the fear and anxiety gripping communities amid ongoing insecurity.

The body also demanded maximum security for all girls’ schools boarding and day while calling for heightened vigilance among school authorities.

It warned North-Central governors to be on high alert, stating: “Paying lip service is no longer enough; proactive security measures must be taken.”

JNI concluded with a renewed call for cooperation among all tiers of government and security agencies, stating: “Government must rise against the tide of insecurity in whatever guise, before it becomes cataclysmic for the Nigerian state.” (Daily Trust)
