Speaker Tajudeen bans committee activities during plenary over poor attendance

Reps Speaker Tajudeen

Worried by the persistent poor attendance of members of the House of Representatives during plenary sessions, the Speaker, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, on Tuesday announced a total ban on all committee activities during plenary, with immediate effect.

Speaking during the plenary, the Speaker disclosed that henceforth, no committee activity should be scheduled for the morning period, in order to ensure full attendance at the session.

He urged the chairmen of standing and ad hoc committees to conduct their activities on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, or after the plenary session.

The Speaker further advised committees and members to take judicial notice of the new directive, warning that any breach would attract sanctions.

The directive follows concerns over low attendance at plenary sessions, as some members have been opting to attend public hearings or committee meetings while plenary is ongoing. (Nigerian Tribune)
