Drama in Plateau, as Sura’s loyalists disown him after dumping PDP for APC

Ex-Plateau governorship aspirant, Brig-Gen John Sura Rtd

Supporters of retired Brigadier General John Sura (Rtd), a former governorship aspirant in Plateau State, have publicly disowned their erstwhile leader following his recent defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing him of pursuing personal ambition rather than collective progress.

In a strongly worded statement signed by Nathaniel Dauda Kyaks, coordinator of the former Liberation Movement, the group described Sura’s exit from the PDP as “a shocking act of betrayal” that was carried out without consultation, discussion, or courtesy to those who once stood by him.

“We were completely unaware of his decision to change allegiance. We only woke up to see his resignation letter posted on Facebook,” the statement read.

“We, the former supporters of the Liberation Movement, remain resolute and absolutely committed to our amiable political party, the PDP, and to the people-focused leadership of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang.”

The group recalled that Sura contested the 2022 PDP governorship primary election, which was adjudged free and fair, but lost to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, now widely known as “The People’s Governor.”

According to the statement, despite Sura’s defeat, Governor Mutfwang extended a hand of friendship and reconciliation to him after taking office. He reportedly offered Sura a strategic role as Secretary of the State Committee on Rehabilitation and Resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) — a gesture meant to foster unity.

“The governor, in his wisdom, even requested Brig Gen Sura to forward names of some of his loyalists for inclusion in government,” the group revealed. “However, he never submitted any names until his resignation. That shows clearly that his decision was personal, not collective.”

The former supporters maintained that Sura abandoned them immediately after the PDP primaries and ceased communication for nearly two years before reappearing to announce his defection. They said they have since resolved to rally behind Governor Mutfwang, whom they credited with implementing the very ideals that Sura once preached — from security reforms and youth empowerment to agricultural revival and infrastructure renewal across the 17 local government areas of Plateau State.

They highlighted ongoing projects such as the recruitment of Operation Rainbow personnel, integration of vigilantes and hunters into community security, youth agricultural schemes, improved healthcare delivery, and massive rural electrification.

“Every ideal once identified with our former principal is now being actualised by Governor Mutfwang,” the statement added. “He is the Finger of God and the Voice of the Voiceless.”

The group announced that it now operates under a new identity — the Re-Elect Mutfwang Again (REMA 2027) Movement — pledging unwavering support for the PDP and the Mutfwang administration.

“We respect Brig Gen Sura’s right to his decision, but his journey to the APC is his alone. We, his former supporters, remain firmly with Governor Mutfwang and the PDP,” the statement concluded.
