Man alerts police, seeks approval to pay wife N2m to accept new bride

Kano State Police PRO, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa

The Kano State Police Command has revealed a rather unusual case, where a man walked into the police headquarters seeking advice on whether it is legal to offer his wife N2 million to consent to his second marriage.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who posted about the incident on his Facebook page on Saturday, the man’s request has sparked interest and raised questions about the intersection of culture, marriage, and the law.

Details of the case are still emerging, but it is unclear what advice the police offered the man, as Kiyawa did not state it in the post.

“A man has come to Bompai (Police headquarters) saying his wife refused to allow him to marry a second wife. He is inquiring whether it is legal to offer her N2 million to consent to the marriage. He was asking if it is against the law or not”, the police spokesman said. (The Guardian, excluding headline)
