The Northern Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Support Group has raised alarm over alleged attempts by some National Working Committee (NWC) members to frustrate preparations for the forthcoming National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Nov. 15 and 16, 2025.
The group’s Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, in a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday in Kaduna, expressed concern over alleged support of certain NWC members for an ongoing legal tussle among top party officials.
Abubakar described the situation as a “dangerous distraction” from genuine efforts to reposition the PDP ahead of future elections.
He accused the National Secretary, National Legal Adviser, and National Organising Secretary of conniving to scuttle arrangements already made for a successful convention in Ibadan.
Abubakar said their actions were contrary to the spirit of internal democracy and collective responsibility enshrined in the PDP constitution.
According to him, their support of the unnecessary litigation at the Federal High Court, Abuja, is a clear indication of a plan by Nyesom Wike and his loyalists to weaken the party through court actions.
Abubakar said the national convention remains the highest decision-making organ of the PDP and represents a vital step towards rebuilding trust, unity, and electoral strength.
Dragging the party’s internal arrangements by some leaders in Abia and Imo States to court is a disservice to the PDP,” he added.
Abubakar said such actions betrayed the aspirations of millions of members who desire a united opposition capable of defending democracy in Nigeria.
The group called for restraint and urged party members to respect internal conflict resolution mechanisms in addressing grievances.
Abubakar reaffirmed support for the leadership of Umar Damagum and the convention planning committees to ensure a transparent and inclusive process in Ibadan.
He also advised former PDP National Youths Leader, Udey-Okoye to stop spreading “lies and propaganda” against the party’s leadership after defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abubakar said it would be in the interest of peace of those who left the PDP to focus on their new political platforms.
He warned that creating political bias and negative noise against the PDP would not help the stability of the country’s democracy.
The Northern PDP support group urged all genuine members to rise above personal interests and work together for the survival of the PDP.
“Our party will come out stronger and united after the Ibadan Convention without fear or intimidation,” he said. (NAN)
