UK passport holders urged to have 'backup plan in place'

The Foreign Office has advised people to have 'a backup plan in place' when travelling abroad.

It is recommended travellers have two essential documents with them when leaving the UK.

While a passport is key, officials encourage people to carry another form of identification.

The foreign travel checklist states: "Take an extra form of photo ID with you, other than your passport."

It also advises holidaymakers and business travellers to have a contingency or "backup plan" in place - intended for situations where you may need to access important information such as accommodation details, flight information, passport number, emergency contacts and insurance policy.

The above could be crucial if you lose your phone, the Mirror reports.

Information could be shared with trusted friends or family members, or stored securely online using a reliable data storage platform.

The Foreign Office also advises taking travellers ensure the below tasks are completed before departure:

  1. Passport is signed and emergency contacts page is completed
  2. Ensure passport meets the entry requirements for the destination of travel
  3. Ensure you have the correct visa for your destination
  4. Take an extra form of photo ID with you, other than your passport
  5. Check whether extra documentation is needed if you are travelling with children
  6. Check if you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) if you plan to drive while abroad

An urgent text was recently sent out by the HM Passport Office to people heading on holiday.

The Liverpool Echo reports it said: "Remember to check that your passport is valid for the country you are travelling to."

The message urged people to "check the entry requirements" listing their website, with a link taking recipients to the Foreign travel advice page.

People can renew their passports via the official GOV.UK website.

The site also allow people to apply for a new passport, update personal details or request a replacement - all while making secure payments online.

Passport fees vary depending on your age and how you apply.

Applying online is the more affordable option, saving you £12.50 compared to applying by post. (YAHOO NEWS)
