The Sokoto State House of Assembly has called on the state government to urgently establish a temporary shelter for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by persistent banditry in the Southern part of the state.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Bashar Jabo (PDP–Tambuwal East) and seconded by Sirajo Shuni (APC–Dange-Shuni) during Thursday’s plenary session in Sokoto.
Presenting the motion, Jabo explained that over 1,000 people, mostly women and children, had been displaced as a result of recurring attacks by bandits, which had brought untold hardship to several communities.
He listed the affected communities seeking refuge in Jabo Town, Tambuwal Local Government Area, as Sakanau, Guraye, Balera, Gyasaladi, Badariya, and Yan Gwal.
“These vulnerable populations are without adequate shelter and are struggling to access food, clean water, and healthcare services.
“The ongoing rainy season has worsened their plight, exposing them to disease, hunger, and further insecurity,” Jabo stated.
He appealed to the assembly to urge the state government, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately establish a temporary shelter in Jabo Town.
According to him, such an intervention would provide a safe and coordinated environment for the displaced persons, while also enabling humanitarian agencies to promptly deliver essential relief materials.
After contributions from other lawmakers, the Speaker, Alhaji Tukur Bala, put the motion to a voice vote, and it was unanimously adopted. (NAN)
