Dr Kema Chikwe, former Minister of Aviation
Former Minister of Aviation, Dr. Kema Chikwe, has commenced the mobilization of women ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that politics remains the most effective way to achieve gender balance in leadership.
Speaking at the 8th anniversary of the Women Leadership Institute (WLI) and the 3rd anniversary of the Women Leadership Institute Network (WLIN) in Abuja on Thursday, Chikwe said the time is right to make the necessary moves and alignments for better opportunities for women in the new political season that’s fast approaching.
“There’s a limit on what we can achieve without political power. For instance, the representation of women in the 10th National Assembly is sadly negligible. This is deeply troubling and must not be allowed to persist.
“The absence of women in legislative spaces means fewer voices to champion gender equity, social justice, and inclusive policies. Thatlia. That must change.”
Dr. Chikwe assured the women that WLI is at the forefront of the push for more voices for women, particularly in areas where they could be part of policy formulation. “As we mark this 8th anniversary, we also look ahead with great anticipation.
“The WLI is evolving. We are migrating to the university. This is no small feat. It is a bold step towards institutionalizing women’s leadership development for generations to come.”
The keynote speaker, Dr. Cecilia Umoren, in her address, highlighted the importance of collaborations and partnerships in building a lasting legacy and challenged the women to focus their attention and strength on things that would secure their future.
She encouraged the participating women to form good associations where good business ventures and opportunities are discussed. “Please, whenever we gather, let’s not discuss Asoebi, earrings, and other related things. Let’s discuss opportunities first before we talk about other things.”
She assured them that the founder and chairman of WLI and her partners will be ever ready to support any course that will herald good opportunities for women in Nigeria and beyond.
Former First Lady of Ekiti State, Bisi Kayode, who was the chairman of the occasion, charged the women to rise and take their places in the affairs of the country.
She appreciated the efforts of WLI and its founder and challenged other individuals and institutions to support the cause of giving women more voice and freedom. (Daily Sun)
