Frank Caprio, the retired Providence, Rhode Island municipal judge known as “the nicest judge in the world,” passed away on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88.
His death was disclosed in a statement posted Wednesday on his Instagram page, which had 3.2 million followers.

Cause of Death
As disclosed on his Instagram page, it reads that he died “after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.” It added he was “beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people.”
He first revealed his diagnosis in December 2023 and had been public about his treatments and health struggles since then, often sharing updates with his millions of followers on social media.
Birth
Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1936, Caprio grew up in modest circumstances working as a dishwasher and shoeshiner.
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Providence College in 1958 and a law degree from Suffolk University while teaching high school civics. He also served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard (1954–1962).
Judicial and Public service career
He entered public service in the 1960s, serving on the Providence City Council and later as chair of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education.
In 1985, he became Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court, a role he held until 2023.
Caprio’s most viral case
Frank Caprio’s show debuted on local access TV and gained national exposure around 2017. By 2022, Caught in Providence had amassed nearly half a billion views online.
He became a social media sensation, with over 3 million followers on Instagram and significant followings on platforms like TikTok.
Community Involvement & Philanthropy
He established scholarships to support Rhode Island students pursuing law and education, founded a scholarship in his father’s name, and supported charities such as Boys Town of Italy and the Rhode Island Food Bank.
After retiring, the Providence City Council renamed his former courtroom in his honor.

Frank Caprio was survived by his wife, Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
