The killing of a 13-year-old herder in Borno Kurukuru District of Taraba has sparked a violent reprisal attack that left more casualties and several others injured.
Zagazola learnt that the deceased, identified as Ali Shauibu, a Fulani, had gone out to graze cattle on August 17 when he was allegedly prevented from entering a Beni-seed farm at Kurmin Biri Village.
Sources said an argument ensued during which the boy was attacked with a machete on the head and leg. His body was later discovered in a nearby farm belonging to a Tiv farmer, Orhembega Suwega, 45.
The incident triggered anger among Fulani youths who mobilised in retaliation. In the ensuing violence, three Tiv men Abraham Akule, 40; Terngu (surname unknown), 48; and another went missing.
During the reprisal, a woman carrying a baby abandoned the child while fleeing. The baby was killed, while three other persons David Kaaor, Joseph Jingili, and Williams Zand, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Primary Health Centre in Borno Kurukuru.
Residents said calm had gradually returned to the community after initial tension, while community elders were making efforts to prevent further escalation. (Zagazola)
