The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has cautioned air travelers against unruly conduct onboard aircraft, warning that offenders risk heavy fines and jail terms under the new Civil Aviation Act, 2022.

Director, Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, NCAA, Michael Achimugu via his verified ‘X’ on Monday, reminded passengers that the law strictly prohibited any form of interference with crew members during flights.

According to him, Section 85 of the Act prescribed stiff penalties for offenders.

“Anyone who interferes with or obstructs flight crew members while performing their duties commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of up to ?200,000 or imprisonment for not less than two months, or both,” Achimugu stated.

He further explained that the law covered a wide range of misconduct, including assault, intimidation, threats, or unruly behavior against crew members.

Such acts, he said, will attract a minimum fine of ?200,000 or a jail term of at least two months.

In addition, passengers who disobey crew instructions and operate electronic devices such as mobile phones that could interfere with aircraft communication or navigational systems also face similar penalties.

Achimugu noted that the pilot-in-command holds full authority to ensure order and safety on board, and may seek the assistance of passengers to restrain unruly individuals if necessary. (Daily Sun)
