Sowore, seeing second right, after his release
Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has been released from police custody.
Sowore confirmed his release in an X post on Friday evening, hours after his supporters protested at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Simultaneous protests were also held in Lagos, Osun and Oyo states.
“I have been released from unjust, unwarranted & unlawful detention,” he said.
The Publisher of Sahara Reporters added, “However, it is nothing to celebrate, work tongues, but I can’t do without thanking you all for not giving up. You’ve all seen the power of unity.”
The police detained Sowore on Wednesday after he honoured an invitation.
The Commissioner of Police for Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle explained to protesters on Friday that the activist was detained for refusing to make a statement upon police interrogation.(Daily Sun, but headline rejigged)
