Engr Timothy Nwachi, Chairman, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State
The Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area in Ebonyi State has announced plans to establish a high-tech automobile diagnostic centre in partnership with Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM).
Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki on Wednesday, the Chairman, Engr. Timothy Nwachi, said the initiative was born out of an interactive session with automobile technicians in Afikpo, during which they requested the development of a dedicated mechanical village.
“Technology is the backbone of modern society, and Afikpo, being the second-largest city in Ebonyi and a hub for modern vehicle users, must be equipped with advanced diagnostic facilities,” Nwachi said.
He explained that following the meeting with local technicians, the Council approached Innoson, who agreed to support the project by providing an electronic diagnostic machine capable of detecting faults in modern vehicles.
According to him, the centre will serve both residents and visitors, and will enhance the capacity of local mechanics to diagnose and repair vehicles using up-to-date tools and techniques.
“We provided land, began construction, and engaged them. As I speak, the structure is ongoing and at an advanced stage. The equipment and facilities that will accompany it are also in the pipeline,” he said.
Nwachi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-centered governance, stressing that his focus remains on improving infrastructure, healthcare, and innovation.
“For me, prioritising the interests of the good people of Afikpo Local Government is the topmost priority. We are guided by our heritage, inspired by the needs of our people, and driven by innovation,” he stated.
Referencing the historical significance of Afikpo, Nwachi recalled that the late Dr. Akanu Ibiam, the first Governor of the Eastern Region and a key figure in the creation of Ebonyi State, hailed from the area.
“Afikpo has always stood at the forefront of civilisation. Building on that legacy means understanding the needs of the people and delivering accordingly,” he added.
On healthcare, the Chairman acknowledged the efforts of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru in deploying doctors and health workers across the state. He noted that his administration has complemented this by addressing access challenges to health facilities in Afikpo.
He cited the example of the health centre in Ugwegu, which was previously inaccessible due to poor road conditions.
“We intervened quickly and constructed a bridge to make the facility reachable. The road work will continue once the rains subside,” he said.
He also revealed that another dilapidated health centre in a different community has been rehabilitated and painted to improve conditions for both health workers and patients.
“Our goal is to ensure that every health centre is accessible, functional, and welcoming to all who need medical attention,” Nwachi said. (The Guardian)
