The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has revealed that it is making deliberate moves to bring back Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into the party.

This was disclosed by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who described Obi as a key political figure whose return would significantly enhance the party’s electoral prospects.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Abdullahi commended Obi’s showing in the 2023 presidential election, where he polled over six million votes nationwide, despite what he referred to as “deliberate frustration” of his chances in several states.

He said, “Peter Obi Is our product. We want to get him back, indeed, because he is a very, very great capital for any political party.”

He noted that had Obi remained with the PDP and not encountered institutional obstacles, his performance in the election could have been even stronger.

“If he had not gone the way he did in the last dispensation and had not faced the institutional obstacles that were placed in his path, we are confident he would have performed even better. That he was still able to command over six million votes shows he is not a candidate to ignore.”

Abdullahi acknowledged that Obi’s departure from the PDP to the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 elections was a significant blow, but maintained that the former vice-presidential candidate continues to enjoy respect and goodwill within the PDP.

“Every political party that gets the opportunity to have him will be at an advantage. And certainly, PDP is not giving up on that effort,” he added.

He further stated that the PDP is currently undertaking internal consultations and formulating long-term strategies aimed at consolidating opposition forces before the 2027 general elections, with efforts to reintegrate Obi forming part of that broader plan.

“In the fullness of time, we believe we might get him back. It will be a big boost to the PDP.” (Nigerian Tribune)
