The Ogun State government has introduced a new approach to waste clearance, offering cash and gift rewards to residents of the state.

The initiative is to ensure a cleaner environment and also create a source of livelihood for residents in the state.

In a two-prong approach, which is a circular model, the government pays residents who clear plastic waste while the citizens earn in a plan tagged ‘Plastic for Cash, ‘including other items.

Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, announced the programme on Monday during an event marking World Environment Day 2025 at the Palace of the Olowu of Owu in Abeokuta, the state capital.

This year’s theme, ’Beating Plastic Pollution’, highlights global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, according to Oresanya, is focused on finding a lasting solution to the issue of waste disposal. He is responding to the global call for action with local solutions aimed at harnessing the economic potential of plastic waste management.

‘Plastic for Cash’, according to Oresanya, aims to reduce pollution, which, in a symbiotic manner, helps people turn waste into wealth.

He said, “This initiative is more than a policy—it’s a movement to incentivise behavioural change,” Oresanya said.

“By turning waste into wealth, we not only tackle pollution but also create economic opportunities for vulnerable groups.”

Oresanya emphasised that the initiative aims to foster sustainable waste management habits and promote environmental responsibility across the state. (The Guardian)
