UNIPORT demands probe into alleged killing of student by security operative




The University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) has called for a thorough investigation into the killing of one of its students, Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science undergraduate, who was allegedly shot dead by a security operative in an off-campus incident.

In an official statement released on Sunday, the institution through its Head, Information, Publications and Public Relations, Dr. Sam Kpenu, expressed deep sorrow over the death of the student.

Although the tragic incident occurred outside the university premises, Uniport stressed its concern and commitment to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the event.

“The University is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law,” the statement read.

The University urged students and staff to remain calm and allow security agencies to conduct their investigations without interference.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this very difficult time,” said Dr. Kpenu.

The management reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of all students and staff, promising to take necessary steps to ensure such incidents do not recur.

“May the soul of our dearly departed student rest in perfect peace”.

The Rivers State Police Command has yet to respond to Channels Television’s inquiries regarding the alleged shooting incident.

UniPort Mourns the Death of Student Involved in Off-Campus Shooting Incident

The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has received with deep sadness the news of the untimely death of Mr. Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level student of Computer Science, who reports say was allegedly killed by a security personnel.

Although the incident occurred outside the University campus and premises, the deceased was a bonafide member of our academic community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this very difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

The University Is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law.

We appeal to members of the University community especially our students to remain calm and allow the relevant agencies to carry out their investigations. The University remains committed to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all students and staff and will continue to take necessary steps to uphold these values.

May the soul of our dearly departed student rest in perfect peace.
