NANS President, Olushola Oladoja
The leadership of four Nigerian student associations has said that the non-payment of allowances to students who participated in the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) since 2018 has caused them significant hardship.
They also stated that the development has discouraged participation in the exercise.
The joint leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), National Association of University Students (NAUS), and the National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students (NANCES), stated this at a joint press conference on Friday.
NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, who read the speech on behalf of the student bodies, lauded the new Director General, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin, for his efforts at resolving the impasse.
Oladoja appealed to affected students to remain calm and exercise patience, assuring that the new ITF leadership “is truly committed to industrial and human capital development in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
The students also appreciated President Tinubu for appointing a dedicated and visionary Director-General, who has rekindled hope and trust in the system.
“As a result of our sustained engagements and the DG’s responsive disposition, we are pleased to announce the following developments: Prompt Payment of SIWES Allowances: Efforts have commenced to address the backlog and ensure students are paid in a timely manner,” he said.
“Seamless Supervision: Improved coordination has been introduced to ensure quality and efficient student supervision during SIWES.
“Cancellation of Logbook Charges: The financial burden of purchasing logbooks has been eliminated, making way for the introduction of the e-Logbook.
“Introduction of the e-Logbook System: A digital innovation that improves tracking, transparency, and accessibility for students and supervisors.
“Student Representation in SIWES Committees: For the first time, students now have a voice in SIWES policy formulation and monitoring processes.
“Elimination of Fraudulent Practices: New controls and transparency mechanisms have drastically reduced instances of fraud and exploitation in the system.” (The Guardian)
