Electrification may be the future, but Walmart, Costco, and Dollar General seem unfazed, they’re becoming gas giants. Wait, what? That’s right. These three major retailers are opening more gas stations. But don’t be mistaken. This isn’t an improvised move, it’s a calculated response to the slow energy transition and the need to build customer loyalty in a fiercely competitive environment.
Of course, it’s all about evolve or die. So these three giants have decided to adapt by turning their parking lots into fuelling centres, but not for electric vehicles. Walmart has already announced more than 45 new gas stations across the U.S., while Costco is extending the hours of its members-only fuel stations. Dollar General, meanwhile, is experimenting with gas stations in the southern part of the country. But weren’t we transitioning to electric? What’s going on?
Gasoline as a strategy
Gas stations are becoming a natural extension of the retail business. Consumers need fuel, and if they can get it at a good price while doing their weekly shopping, even better. Walmart and Costco know this well, which is why they’re investing in a sector many thought was already in decline.
With more than 450 proprietary gas stations in 34 states, Walmart is focusing on price-sensitive customers. Their offer is clear: accessible stations for everyone, with exclusive discounts for Walmart+ subscribers, who can save up to 10 cents per gallon. And yes, it actually sounds appealing.
A response to tariffs
As you probably know, tariffs on Chinese imports have hit these companies hard. Now, Walmart is trying to offset the impact on sales by offering gasoline as added value. The stations not only help attract customers but also cushion the blow of declining revenue due to inflation and trade tensions.
What about Costco?
Costco isn’t staying behind. Its members-only gas stations account for around 12% of its total sales. They’ve now extended their hours until 10 PM at most locations, staying open well after the stores close so anyone can fill up. It’s actually a smart move.
And electric cars?
While many are hoping for an imminent shift to electrification, the reality is that current infrastructure isn’t ready. There are not enough chargers, the vehicles have limited range, and long charging times slow down adoption. So for now… there’s no telling when (or if) mass transition will arrive.
So then…
So now you’ll be able to do your shopping while filling your tank, doesn’t that sound a lot more convenient than going to a separate gas station and then heading to the store? Now you can do it all in one place.
The present still runs on gas
Experts like Joe Camberato from NationalBusinessCapital.com say the world still “runs on gas” and that major shifts take decades. In that sense, these retailers aren’t going against the future, they’re adapting to the present.
Also preparing for what’s next
Manish Choudhary, CEO of SymphonyAI, explains that gas stations could also become the gateway to the electric era. Today’s stations could easily be converted into charging points where customers spend more time (and more money) inside the store.
Fill your tank and your cart
Adapt or disappear, as we said earlier: adapt. What used to be the exclusive domain of oil companies is now just another service in the modern supermarket. Walmart, Costco, and other retailers are proving that selling gasoline isn’t incompatible with sustainability or innovation, it’s just a smart way to attract more customers!
What do you think of this new ‘retailer’ concept? Could they adapt their stores to function as gas stations or do you think the diesel future doesn’t include them?? Let us know what you think! (Union Rayo)
