Prof Peter Ogban, Godswill Akpabio
The Court of Appeal in Calabar has affirmed the conviction of Peter Ogban, a professor of soil science at the University of Calabar, for manipulating election results.
Ogban was sentenced to three years in prison and fined N100,000 by the Akwa Ibom High Court in March 2021 for altering the results of the 2019 senatorial election to favour the All Progressives Congress (APC).
As reported by Premium Times, the appellate court upheld the conviction and three-year prison sentence handed down by the trial court. Ogban, who served as the returning officer in the Akwa Ibom north-west senatorial election, was found guilty of announcing false election results in favour of Godswill Akpabio, the then-APC senatorial candidate.
This recent development follows a similar case where Ignatius Uduk, a professor at the University of Uyo, was sentenced to three years imprisonment for falsification of election results, as reported by TheCable news. Uduk was convicted for publishing false election results related to the 2019 state house of assembly election in Akwa Ibom north-west. (BusinessDay)
