Atiba University Oyo; Dr James Ojebode, founder and president
The Founder and President of Atiba University, Oyo, Dr. James Ojebode, has explained the rationale behind offering tuition-free courses at the institution, revealing that the move aims to address critical development needs in Nigeria.
Dr. Ojebode made this disclosure during the university’s inaugural Founder’s Public Lecture at the institution’s auditorium in Oyo town, Oyo State, on Wednesday.
He said, “I introduced tuition-free programs in Agriculture and Education to respond to Nigeria’s pressing developmental needs. Agriculture is central to Nigeria’s economy, and training the next generation of farmers and agricultural professionals is essential for food security and economic advancement.
“Similarly, education plays a pivotal role in unlocking Nigeria’s human potential, and nurturing high-quality teachers and educators is vital for the nation’s future. By offering these programs without tuition fees, we hope to attract talented students who may otherwise be discouraged by financial challenges.”
The founder added, “Atiba University was established to contribute to Nigeria’s progress by providing world-class education that empowers students with the knowledge and skills needed to drive innovation and growth. My vision is to create an institution that not only excels academically but also promotes entrepreneurship and community engagement.”
On the current state of education in Nigeria, he expressed optimism, noting that the government’s focus on education has been evident through initiatives such as infrastructure revitalisation, teacher training programmes, and scholarships.
He stated, “Although challenges remain, the increasing recognition of education as a driver of economic growth and development is promising. With continued investment and effort, Nigeria’s education sector can improve and create opportunities for our youth.”
The event, titled “Rethinking Tertiary Education in Nigeria through Private Universities for Sustainable Development”, was attended by notable scholars and politicians, including the guest speaker, Professor Toyin Falola from the Department of History at the University of Texas, Austin; Oyo State’s Commissioner for Education, Professor Salihu Adelabu; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Oyo State Governor on Culture and Tourism, Seyi Omo-Ode, among other academics, management, staff, and students.
In his speech, Professor Falola lauded Dr. Ojebode for founding the institution and striving to build a better future for Nigeria through education.
He stated, “I know people who have wealth but waste it on frivolous things. Instead of spending money on unnecessary luxuries, why not sponsor a student at Atiba University Oyo and make a real difference in someone’s life?”
Professor Falola also pledged to support the university by sponsoring tuition for students facing financial hardship.
While delivering his lecture, Professor Emeritus highlighted the challenge of outdated curricula in many Nigerian institutions, which often fail to meet the demands of the modern job market.
He noted that this misalignment, combined with an overemphasis on rote memorisation rather than critical thinking, contributes to Nigeria’s high rate of unemployed graduates.
He emphasised the increasing appeal of private universities, which offer better learning environments, up-to-date curricula, and industry-specific courses.
He called on the government to offer greater support to private universities, including extending scholarships and access to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to help these institutions fulfill their roles in national development.
He also encouraged Atiba University Oyo to establish an incubation center to foster innovation and urged students to leverage technology for personal development.
“The university of the future must embrace technology. It should empower both men and women to take technology seriously and cultivate entrepreneurial spirit among students. You must encourage project incubation, create platforms for the best ideas, and partner with investors who can turn those ideas into products,” Professor Falola stated.
On his part, the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Professor Salihu Adelabu, commended Atiba University Oyo for its contribution to education in the state.
He said, “In record time, Oyo State now has eight private universities, and we do not take lightly your impact. The state government will continue to appreciate and collaborate with your efforts. I encourage the students here to seize the opportunity at Atiba University Oyo. Nigerians are exceptionally talented, but often we squander that talent. Your degree is just the beginning – don’t stand still when opportunities arise.”
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of Atiba University Oyo, Professor Sunday Okeniyi, stressed the importance of rethinking Nigeria’s higher education system.
“Atiba University Oyo is not just another institution; it is a movement. We are equipping our students with more than just degrees; we are preparing them to be leaders, thinkers, and innovators who will drive Nigeria’s progress,” he said.
Professor Okeniyi also urged the government to prioritise education as the foundation of national development, calling on fellow academics to embrace innovative teaching approaches.
“Investing in education is not an expense; it is an investment in our future,” he stated.
The event was further enriched by a vibrant cultural performance from the university’s cultural group, while Professor Falola led a session of praise-singing in honour of the institution’s founder. (The PUNCH, excluding headline)
